How To Play The Much Neglected Game Of American Darts

American darts is an entirely different game from the conventional British game of darts, despite being played on a board which is essentially the same, as well as materials used. Whereas the British game of darts has penetrated much of the world now, the American game remains largely unknown outside the area in which it originated, Philadelphia. There is no real reason why this should be, as a player skilled at one form of darts ought to be able to adjust readily to the other form. Now, we are seeing electronic darts becoming ever more popular, and these boards are being made in the traditional British design.

There are versions of the American game which can be customized and played adaptively on the British style board. The best example of this is baseball darts, which has several different versions. Whereas baseball darts can be adapted to be played on British dart boards, you cannot play the traditional game of darts on an American style board, which is a specialist board for the playing of American darts. There are also slight differences in the measurements used. A board used for American darts will be placed with the center 5' 3” from the floor, which is slightly lower than the height used in traditional darts.

To begin with, the very first step in American darts is to find out the shooting order. This is done by having players throw at the cork. The cork is the equivalent of the bullseye in a game of traditional darts. Once the order has been decided, the players are allowed to throw warm up practice darts just as they are in traditional darts, but they need to announce this fact. The practice darts must also not be thrown at the first inning target. If the game is being played by teams, the whole of the fist team will throw at the board before the second team gets to do the same.

One major difference to observe in American darts which would sometimes confuse a traditional player is the aspect of sharing darts between players, and it is not common for a player to retrieve his own darts from the board. This is in direct contrast to the traditional form of darts, where a player will throw his three darts and then always retrieve them before the other player throws. If a regular player of British darts tried to play the American game, it is certain that they would keep going to fetch the darts back, before realizing they shouldn't. It would just be an inbuilt reaction after years of play.

American baseball darts however is played with a similar dart scoring system to baseball itself, in that it is played for nine innings and the team with the highest score at the end of those nine innings is the winner. As with baseball, if the game is tied after the ninth inning, it goes into extra innings to determine a winner. American darts is a game which deserves more publicity than it gets, and it can provide an interesting change for regular players of the British game.
