What You Need To Know About Darts Shafts, And Where To Find Good Ones

The most critical part of the dart is the area called the darts shafts, which due to excessive play would require replacement more often than you would want. Although the main body of a dart seems like a pretty sturdy fixture, the shaft is actually quite delicate and breakable. The problem is likely to occur when a dart is thrown at the board, hits the wire in between the scoring segments, and flies into the air. If the dart happens to land on a hard piece of ground, and land on the edge of the shaft, it can snap the plastic. This leaves the screw part of the dart shaft in the metal end, while the rest of the broken shaft will be separate.

When this happens, there is nothing you can do but replace the shaft. The plastic screw section which will be embedded in the metal part of the dart will need to be prized clear with a special tool which is available from retailers of darts equipment. This will save the metal part of the dart, and allow for the fitting of a replacement dart shaft. The original flight may well have escaped damage, in which case it can be put into the replacement shaft, and the dart should perform as it did before.

If you are going to be playing competitive darts, it is absolutely imperative that you take back up equipment. If a dart should fly off the wire and become damaged in this way, there is no way to effect a short term repair. You need to be able to take a replacement dart straight out of your pocket, and begin again with three identical darts. It should also be mentioned that whereas the incidence of darts bouncing off the wire has become far less in recent years at the professional level, the problem still exists at many lower level events.

The reason for this is the wire used on a dart board. The professional game uses what is called 'diamond' wire, which is a wire with a hard edge pointing towards the dart player. This increases dramatically the chance of a dart being guided off the wire and into the scoring segment. The hard, old fashioned round wire used in the past is, of course, still in use in most amateur venues in darts. This means that the amateur player needs to be extra vigilant in making sure that he has the necessary back up equipment.

Darts shafts have, like the rest of the dart, gone through much change as technology has advanced. They are now made from acetal co-polymer. This durable but pliable plastic decreases the incidence of darts breaking, as well as providing balance in the dart which helps it to feel comfortable in the player's hand. As with most sports equipment, it is possible to spend a lot of money on advanced darts shafts, but the majority of players just need something in the middle range which will perform well without being prohibitively expensive. You can choose from a quite a wide range of technically sound and good value darts shafts.
